Judge orders CSIS to quit bugging terror suspect

A Toronto judge has ordered Canada's spy agency to stop listening in on telephone conversations terrorism suspects and their lawyers.

Carolyn Layden-Stevenson has ordered C-SIS to stop intercepting such calls and to delete any agents inadvertently record.

The federal court judge released information today that the wiretapping was to ensure the communication does not involve a potential breach of the bail conditions.

The monitoring occurred in the case of Mohammad Mahjoub, accused of ties to al-Qaida.

Mahjoub spent more than six years in custody without charge or trial but was released last year on strict bail conditions that included monitoring by security agents.

His lawyer Barbara Jackman calls it shocking, noting the Supreme Court has recognized that solicitor-client privilege is a fundamental principle of justice.''
