THE Federal Government has demanded an explanation from a company with close ties to Eddy Groves that told parents on Thursday it would close 14 child-care centres on December 31.
Neighbourhood Early Learning Centres said it would shut four NSW centres, one in Queensland and nine in Victoria, leaving 200 staff and 1000 families unsure of arrangements for next year.
The national secretary of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union, Louise Tarrant, said the operating company was "part of the ABC empire that's gone horribly wrong". ..Read more

THE complex financial structure of Western Australia's militant construction union will come under the spotlight during a five-day inquiry into why the state union appears to have $26 million in assets but no members.
An estimated $200,000 of union funds could be spent on lawyers in the West Australian Industrial Relations Commission, which will attempt to resolve the puzzling state of affairs uncovered by The Australian and a hearing last Friday in which arguments raged over which union members were eligible to vote in its coming election. ..Read more
