The Vatican City State, the world's smallest sovereign state, has decided to divorce itself from Italian law.
Vatican legal experts say there are too many laws in Italian civil and criminal codes, and that they frequently conflict with Church principles.
With effect from New Year's Day, the Pope has decided that the Vatican will no longer automatically adopt laws passed by the Italian parliament. ..Read more

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has signed into law a media bill that journalists say will curtail press freedom.
The law gives the Kenyan authorities the power to raid media offices, tap phones and control broadcast content on grounds of national security.
Mr Kibaki said he had carefully considered the journalists' concerns but added press freedom must go hand in hand with responsibility. ..Read more

THE Federal Government has demanded an explanation from a company with close ties to Eddy Groves that told parents on Thursday it would close 14 child-care centres on December 31.
Neighbourhood Early Learning Centres said it would shut four NSW centres, one in Queensland and nine in Victoria, leaving 200 staff and 1000 families unsure of arrangements for next year.
The national secretary of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union, Louise Tarrant, said the operating company was "part of the ABC empire that's gone horribly wrong". ..Read more

BAGHDAD (AP) — The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush during a news conference was beaten afterward and had bruises on his face and around his eyes, a judge said Friday.
Judge Dhia al-Kinani, the magistrate investigating the incident, said the court has opened an investigation into the alleged beating of journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi.
Al-Zeidi was wrestled to the ground after throwing his shoes during the news conference Sunday by Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and there has been conflicting claims on his condition since then. One of his brothers said he was harshly beaten, but another said he seemed to be in good condition. ..Read more

A Toronto judge has ordered Canada's spy agency to stop listening in on telephone conversations terrorism suspects and their lawyers.
Carolyn Layden-Stevenson has ordered C-SIS to stop intercepting such calls and to delete any agents inadvertently record.
The federal court judge released information today that the wiretapping was to ensure the communication does not involve a potential breach of the bail conditions. ..Read more

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio’s secretary of state filed a complaint Thursday with the Ohio Elections Commission claiming former Attorney General Marc Dann misspent about $45,000 in campaign funds.
The complaint filed by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner accuses Dann of violating campaign finance law by spending $40,610 from his campaign on security improvements to his personal residence. ..Read more

LAHORE: About 1,500 lawyers, civil society activists and political workers took to The Mall to rally for the reinstatement of the sacked judges on Thursday.
The National Coordination Council gave the protest call. Followed by the general house meetings, the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) and Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) took out their rallies from Aiwan-e-Adl and the Lahore High Court respectively. The two rallies joined at GPO Chowk and marched towards the Punjab Assembly Hall.
